Pool lighting looks simple until you’re staring at a product grid of near-identical fittings at wildly different prices, with no idea why one costs RM90 and another RM1,700. This guide cuts through that. First the four things that actually decide whether a pool light lasts, then what it costs, then honest advice depending on whether you’re lighting an Airbnb, your own home pool, or a condo’s shared pool. The right choice isn’t the same for all three.

Get these right and the rest is taste and budget.
IP68 waterproof rating
IP68 is the rating for continuous submersion. It’s the single most important spec, and the one most often fudged on cheap fittings. IP65 or IP67 sound close, but they’re only rated for splashes or brief immersion, and in a pool they let water in eventually. If a listing just says “waterproof” without the IP68 number, treat that as a warning.
Low-voltage safety (12V / 24V)
Pool lights run on 12V or 24V through a transformer, never on mains voltage. This isn’t optional — it’s an electrical fitting in water people swim in. The transformer, bonding and earthing have to be installed by a competent electrician. This matters more the more people use the pool, which is why it comes up again in the condo section below.
Wattage and how many lights
More watts isn’t automatically better. As a rough guide, one 18W fitting lights about 15 to 20 square metres of pool for a soft, even glow. A long or L-shaped pool wants a few fittings spaced along one wall rather than a single bright unit that leaves dark corners. Pale pool interiors bounce light around and need fewer; dark tiles absorb it and need more.
Colour: warm white, cool white or RGB
Warm white (around 3000K) feels calm and resort-like. Cool white (6000K) looks crisp and shows the water clearer. RGB gives you colour on a controller for feature pools and events. Which one is “right” depends heavily on who’s using the pool — more on that in the audience sections.
What underwater pool lights cost in Malaysia
Retail fittings run from about RM90 for small units to over RM1,700 for large branded ones. The spread comes down to wattage, housing material (corrosion-resistant stainless lasts far longer in chlorinated water), and whether you’re paying importer and reseller margins on a foreign brand. Buying factory-direct removes a layer of that margin, which barely matters for one home fitting but matters a lot across a condo’s worth of pools. If you run an Airbnb or short-stay rental
Your pool lighting is doing marketing before it does anything else. A well-lit pool at dusk is the photo that sells the listing, and it’s the difference between the pool at night being the thing guests mention in a review and it going unmentioned. Warm white or a tasteful RGB on a calm colour photographs best; harsh cool white can look clinical in listing shots.
After the photo, think about the two things short-stay hosts get burned by: safety and maintenance. Guests use the pool unsupervised, often at night, so even, glare-free lighting that shows the pool edges clearly is a real safety feature, not a luxury. And every fitting that fails is a callout, a bad review risk, and a gap between bookings — so pay for IP68 and a stainless housing rather than the cheapest unit, because a RM90 fitting that dies in a year costs you far more than it saved. If it’s your own home pool
For a home pool the priority is usually how it looks from the house and what it costs to run. Warm white suits most gardens and reads relaxed from the patio; go cool white if your pool is modern and tiled dark. One or two well-placed fittings do more than a row of bright ones — you’re after a glow, not a floodlit car park.
The other common home situation is a light that’s already died. Good news: you rarely need to drain the pool. On a standard PAR56 fitting the light pulls out on a coil of slack cable to the poolside, where the LED unit is swapped and fed back in. Swapping an old halogen for an LED PAR56 drops straight into the same niche and cuts the running cost sharply for comparable brightness at a fraction of the wattage. If you manage a condo or shared pool
Shared pools change the priorities entirely. Three things matter more than looks.
First, safety and compliance. A pool used by dozens of residents, often unsupervised and after dark, raises the stakes on low-voltage supply, bonding and earthing — this is the fitting most likely to draw a question at an AGM or from an insurer, so specify IP68 fittings on a properly installed 12V/24V system and keep the paperwork. Second, warranty and local support. When a fitting fails on a shared pool, you need a replacement fast and someone accountable, not a distributor waiting on an overseas shipment — buying from a local manufacturer means spares and support are a phone call away. Third, budgeting and standardisation. Fitting one spec of light across every block makes maintenance and future replacements simpler, and factory-direct pricing on project quantities is far easier to get a management committee to approve. Buying locally vs importing
Most pool lights sold here are imported units resold through electrical shops and marketplaces. That’s fine until one fails — then support sits two or three steps back from whoever made it, and a replacement can mean weeks of waiting. Buying from a Malaysian manufacturer means the wattage, colour and finish can be matched to your pool, spares are held locally, and the warranty is with the people who made the fitting. For a single home light that’s a nice-to-have; for a rental or a condo it’s the whole difference.
