Types of swimming pool lights
Three formats cover almost every pool. Which one you need comes down to whether your pool has a pre-cast niche.
PAR56 niche lights
PAR56 is the standard round format that drops into a pre-cast niche in the pool wall. If your pool was built with a light recess, this is almost certainly what fits. It’s also the easiest to service later, since the fitting pulls out on its cable without any wet work.
Surface and wall-mount lights
Older pools and some fibreglass pools have no niche. Surface- and wall-mount fittings solve that — they bolt to the wall or step and run the cable through a sealed gland, so you don’t have to cut a recess into an existing pool.
RGB colour-change lights
For feature pools, hotels and show pools, RGB fittings shift through colours on a controller. They cost more and need that controller, so they earn their place where someone will actually use the colour rather than leave it on plain white.

How to choose a swimming pool light
Get these four right and the rest is taste.
IP68 waterproofing
IP68 is the rating for continuous submersion. IP65 or IP67 fittings are only splash- or short-immersion-rated, and in a pool they will eventually let water in. This is the corner most often cut on budget lights. If a listing just says “waterproof” without the IP68 rating, be careful.
12V vs 24V low-voltage safety
Pool lights run on 12V or 24V through a transformer, never on mains voltage. That’s a safety rule: it’s an electrical fixture in water people swim in. 24V handles longer cable runs with less voltage drop, which helps on bigger pools; 12V is fine for most homes. Either way, a competent person handles the transformer, bonding and earthing.
How many lights for your pool size
More watts isn’t automatically brighter where it counts. As a starting point, one 18W fitting lights about 15 to 20 square metres for a soft, even glow. A long or L-shaped pool wants a few fittings spaced along one wall instead of a single bright unit that leaves dark ends. Pale interiors bounce light around and need fewer; dark tiles absorb it and need more.
Warm white, cool white or RGB
Warm white, around 3000K, feels calm and resort-like. Cool white at 6000K looks crisp and shows the water clearer. RGB gives you colour scenes for events. For a home pool, warm or cool white keeps most owners happy. Keep RGB for pools where the colour will get used.
Replacing or retrofitting an existing pool light
A lot of people searching for a pool light already have a pool. They just have a light that’s stopped working. On a standard PAR56 setup you usually don’t drain anything. The fitting is fed by a coil of slack cable, so you lift it out of the niche, bring it up to the poolside, and swap the sealed LED unit there before feeding it back.
If your old fitting is a halogen PAR56, an LED PAR56 replacement drops straight into the same niche and cuts the running cost sharply for the same brightness. Where there’s no niche at all, a surface-mount LED fitting retrofits without breaking the pool shell. The one thing worth an electrician’s eye is the transformer and earthing behind the light, especially on older installations. What IP rating do swimming pool lights need?
IP68, the rating for continuous submersion. Anything lower, like IP65 or IP67, is only splash- or short-immersion-rated and will let water in over time. Check that the fitting states IP68, not just “waterproof.”
Can I replace a swimming pool light myself?
On many PAR56 fittings you can swap the LED unit yourself by pulling the fixture out on its slack cable to the poolside, so there’s no need to drain the pool. But the transformer, bonding and earthing should be checked by a competent electrician. If you’re unsure, use one.
