How to choose an underwater light
Four things decide whether a fitting lasts. Get these right and the rest is aesthetics.
IP68 waterproof rating, and why it matters
IP68 is the rating for continuous submersion. Anything less — IP65, IP67 — is only splash- or short-immersion-rated, and it will eventually let water in. This is the single most common corner cut on cheap pool lights. If a listing says “waterproof” without stating IP68, treat that as a red flag.
Low-voltage safety: 12V vs 24V
Underwater fittings run on 12V or 24V low voltage through a transformer, never mains voltage. This is a safety requirement, not a preference — you’re putting an electrical fixture in water people swim in. 24V lets you run longer cable runs with less voltage drop, which helps on larger pools; 12V is fine for most residential jobs. Either way, the transformer and the earthing have to be installed by a competent person.
Wattage and brightness for your pool size
More watts isn’t automatically better. As a starting point, one 18W fitting lights roughly 15 to 20 square metres of pool for a soft, even glow. A long lap pool wants several fittings spaced along one wall rather than one bright unit that leaves dark corners. Pale pool interiors reflect light and need less; dark tiles drink it up and need more.
Colour: warm white, cool white or RGB
Warm white (around 3000K) reads calm and resort-like. Cool white (6000K) looks crisp and modern and shows the water clearer. RGB gives you colour scenes for events and feature displays, but it costs more and needs a controller. For a home pool, most owners are happiest with warm or cool white. Save RGB for where someone will actually use the colour.

What IP rating do swimming pool lights need?
IP68, the rating for continuous submersion. IP65 or IP67 fittings are only splash- or short-immersion-resistant and will eventually fail underwater. Confirm the fitting is rated IP68 specifically, not just described as “waterproof.”
Can LED lights be used underwater?
Only fittings built for it. A submersible LED light has a sealed housing, an IP68 rating and a low-voltage 12V or 24V supply. Ordinary LED downlights or strip lights aren’t sealed for submersion and are dangerous in water.
